Lovelace-CRCE: Exposure Core
The function of the Exposure Core is to provide support for inhalation and other routes of exposures of Sulfur Mustard (SM), therapeutic agents, and other compounds to well-characterized test atmospheres that are required in the research plans of Projects 1–5.
The support will include:
Inhalation, dermal, or ocular exposures of animals to SM vapor and aerosol/vapor mixtures
Inhalation exposure of therapeutic agents for efficacy
In vitro
exposure of tissues and blood to SM
Inhalation exposure to cigarette smoke for an animal emphysema model
We have constructed a unique facility in combination with the Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis Cores for the synthesis, use, and disposal of SM.
The Exposure Core will provide services for:
Developing and performing inhalation exposures for animal studies
Ensuring high-quality exposure atmospheres (reproducible, state-of-the-art)
Ensuring that the exposure generation system is operated and maintained according to predefined specifications
Manipulating exposure atmospheres (e.g., adjusting concentration and size distribution of generated aerosols) for meeting the requirements specified for a given study
The Exposure Core provides a unique state-of-the-art exposure system for the controlled and safe exposure to highly toxic agents such as SM, and will greatly contribute to the success of the studies to be conducted in Research Projects 1-5 of the Lovelace-CRCE.
