Lovelace-CRCE Research Project 1: Identification of Diagnostic and Dosage Markers of Sulfur Mustard Exposure

The overall goal of the Lovelace-CREC is to develop animal models of Sulfur Mustard (SM) exposure to identify and test therapeutic interventions specifically for use in a triage setting. In order to accomplish our overall goal, Project 1 is charged with identifying biomarkers relevant to the various routes of SM exposure and tissues exposed to develop rapid and simple diagnostic tests for use in a civilian triage setting of SM exposure.

Specifically, Project 1 will identify and validate biomarkers (known and yet-to-be identified) in association with disease outcome and therapeutic intervention (Dr. Seagrave, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute). These biomarkers will feed directly into the development of a diagnostic test that will employ lateral flow strips (Drs. Tan and Batich, University of Florida).

The objective of these studies is to identify a comprehensive set of biomarkers associated with SM-exposure so that exposure dose and time after exposure can be predicted. We are hopeful that alterations in protein expression and SM alkylation of proteins can be used as biomarkers for our stated objective and that the lateral flow strip technology will provide state-of-the-art diagnostic tests.
